How to Summarize a PDF with AI for Free: ChatGPT, Gemini Notebook, Claude, Copilot and Adobe
Step-by-step ways to turn a long PDF into notes, an executive summary or a list of key numbers. Includes a copy-and-paste prompt and a quick way to catch mistakes.

Short answer: Upload the PDF to a free AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini Notebook (the new name for NotebookLM), Claude or Microsoft Copilot, then ask for a summary in a set format, for example "8 bullet points with page numbers". For study material, Gemini Notebook is the easiest to check, because its answers cite the exact passages they came from. Always spot-check the summary against the PDF, and keep confidential files out of free tools until you've checked their privacy settings.
This guide is for students and busy professionals who need the gist of a long PDF fast.
Which free AI tool should you use?
All five accept PDFs on a free account. Limits below are as of November 2026, from each vendor's help pages.
| Tool | Free upload limits (official) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | A few uploads a day on Free; more on paid plans | Quick summaries and follow-up questions |
| Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) | 50 sources per notebook; each up to 500,000 words or 200 MB | Study notes with clickable citations |
| Claude | 20 files per chat, 500 MB each, up to 1,000 pages | Long reports, charts in shorter PDFs |
| Microsoft Copilot | 20 files per conversation, 50 MB each | People already using Microsoft apps |
| Adobe AI summary generator | "A complimentary, limited number of uses" | One quick summary, no sign-in needed to upload |
Our recommendation: use Gemini Notebook for anything you need to study or quote, and ChatGPT or Claude when you want to chat back and forth about a document.
How do you summarize a PDF with ChatGPT?
- Go to chatgpt.com and sign in with a free account.
- Click the attach button next to the message box.
- Choose your PDF and wait until it finishes uploading.
- Paste a summary prompt from the prompt section and press Enter.
- Ask a follow-up such as "Which page says that? Quote it."
OpenAI says ChatGPT can summarize or compare files and pull out information from them. Free accounts get only a few uploads per day, so see the uploads step in our ChatGPT guide for plan details.
How do you summarize a PDF with Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM)?
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It is the same product, and the old address redirects to the new one.
- Go to notebook.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
- Create a new notebook.
- Upload your PDF as a source.
- Type your summary prompt in the chat.
- Hover over any citation to see the full quoted text from your PDF.
- Save useful answers as notes so you can review them later.
Did you know? Gemini Notebook can turn the same PDF into a spoken, podcast-style Audio Overview with two AI hosts. Our guide on making a podcast with AI shows how.
Prefer the regular Gemini app? At gemini.google.com, click Add files, choose Upload, and pick your PDF. Google lists up to 10 files per prompt and 100 MB per file.
Claude, Copilot and Adobe: the quick steps
Claude
- Go to claude.ai and sign in.
- Attach the PDF or drag it into the chat box.
- Send your summary prompt.
Anthropic's help center says Claude reads both text and visuals (charts, images, graphics) in PDFs of up to 100 pages. From 101 to 1,000 pages, it reads the text only. Our GPT vs Claude comparison covers how the two handle files.
Microsoft Copilot
- Go to copilot.microsoft.com or open the Copilot app.
- Press the + icon and choose Add images or files.
- Pick your PDF.
- Type your summary prompt and send it.
Adobe's free AI summary generator
- Open Adobe's AI summary generator page in any browser.
- Click Select a file, or drag your PDF onto the page.
- Read the summary it creates.
- Sign in only if you want more summaries or want to save the file.
Adobe's page accepts PDF, DOCX, PPTX, TXT and RTF files. Free use is a limited number of summaries; Adobe doesn't publish the exact count, and its paid AI Assistant add-on unlocks full access.

What prompt gets a good summary?
"Summarize this" gets you a vague paragraph. Tell the AI who the summary is for, what shape you want, and to stick to the document. Copy one of these:
STUDY NOTES
Summarize the attached PDF as study notes for a beginner.
1. A 3-sentence overview.
2. The key ideas as bullets, each with its page number.
3. Key terms with one-line definitions.
4. 5 quiz questions with answers at the end.
Use only the PDF. If something isn't in it, say "not in the document".
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Write a one-page executive summary of the attached PDF for a busy manager.
Start with the main conclusion, then 5 key points, risks, and recommended next steps.
Give a page number for every claim.
KEY NUMBERS
List every number, date, deadline and amount in the attached PDF
in a table with columns: item, value, page number, exact quote.
Do not round or estimate anything.
For more ways to shape answers, see our guide on how to write better prompts for AI.
How do you check the summary for mistakes?
AI summaries can drop important caveats, mix up numbers, or state things the PDF never says. Gemini Notebook's own help page says it "can make mistakes" and asks you to double-check it. A two-minute check catches most problems:
- Pick the three claims that matter most and open the pages they cite.
- Compare every number in the summary with the PDF itself.
- Ask: "What important points did you leave out?"
- Ask: "Quote the exact sentence that supports point 3."
- Treat any claim without a page reference as unconfirmed.
Scanned PDFs. Try to select a word in the PDF. If you can't, it's an image of text, and some tools will read it badly or not at all. Run OCR first, for example with Google Docs, as explained in our PDF to Word guide. Claude reads page visuals for PDFs up to 100 pages, which can also help.
Very long PDFs. If you hit an upload limit, or the summary skips whole chapters, split the PDF into sections and summarize each one separately.
Is it safe to upload confidential PDFs?
Every tool here uploads your file to the vendor's servers. Here's what each one's official pages say, as of November 2026:
- ChatGPT: chats may be used for training unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings → Data controls. Temporary chats aren't used for training, but OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days.
- Claude: turn off Help improve our AI models under Settings → Privacy to keep new chats out of training.
- Gemini Notebook: for personal Google accounts, Google says your data is not used to train Gemini Notebook unless you send feedback. Workspace accounts are excluded from training and human review.
- Gemini app: Google says some chats are reviewed by humans and asks you not to enter confidential information. Turning off Keep Activity stops future chats being used for training or reviewed.
- Microsoft Copilot: Microsoft says uploaded files are not used for model training and are deleted after no more than 18 months.
- Adobe: files are deleted unless you sign in to save them.
Never upload contracts, medical records, ID documents or client files to a free AI tool without your employer's approval. Remove names and account numbers first, or use a tool your organisation has approved.
