Short answer: To use ChatGPT, go to chatgpt.com or install the official app on your phone or computer, then create a free account. Type a question or task in the message box and press Enter. Reply with follow-ups such as "shorter" or "add an example" to improve the answer. You can also attach files and photos, talk to it by voice, and keep ongoing work in Projects. Before you share anything personal, check two privacy settings: Temporary Chat and the training opt-out.

This guide is for people who are new to ChatGPT, or who have only typed a few questions into it. It is the ChatGPT-specific follow-up to our tool-agnostic beginner's guide to AI: setup on each device, first chats, uploads, voice, search, Projects, privacy, plans and common mistakes. Features and prices were checked against OpenAI's pages on November 3, 2026.

ChatGPT Tutorial for Beginners: How to Actually Get Work Done with AI — Kevin Stratvert

Kevin Stratvert's 14-minute tutorial shows these basics on screen. It was published on July 1, 2026, before GPT-6 Astra arrived, so some screens and model names in it may look different today.

Step 1: Choose Where to Use ChatGPT

ChatGPT works the same way everywhere, and your chats sync between devices when you are signed in.

WhereHow to get itNotes
Web (any laptop or desktop)Go to chatgpt.comNothing to install
Desktop appDownload from OpenAIOpenAI's docs list macOS, Windows and Linux
iPhone and iPadApp Store: "ChatGPT" by OpenAIRequires iOS or iPadOS 18.0 or later
AndroidGoogle Play: "ChatGPT" by OpenAICheck the developer name is OpenAI

Some practical points:

  • Account. Select Sign up on the sign-in page to create a free account. OpenAI's help center says you can use ChatGPT without signing in, but then it supports only one conversation at a time, and you need an account to save chats.
  • Age. OpenAI's terms require users to be at least 13 (or older where local law says so), and anyone under 18 needs permission from a parent or guardian.
  • Fake apps. App stores contain look-alike "AI chat" apps. Install only the one published by OpenAI.

Step 2: Learn the Interface

Every version has the same main parts:

  • The message box at the bottom, where you type. Next to it are buttons to attach files and to use your voice.
  • The sidebar on the left (behind the menu icon on phones), with your past chats, your Projects and a button for a new chat.
  • The model menu at the top, where paid plans can choose a different model. Free users don't need to change anything.
  • Settings, under your name or profile picture. This is where personalization and privacy controls live.

Step 3: Have Your First Conversation

  1. Start with a real task. Skip test questions like "What is AI?" Try something you need today: "Write a short, friendly message to my landlord asking when the broken heater will be fixed. Keep it polite and under 80 words."
  2. Read the answer, then follow up. ChatGPT remembers everything earlier in the same chat. Reply with changes: "Make it firmer." "Add that it has been broken for a week."
  3. Start a new chat for a new topic. Leftover context from an unrelated chat can confuse the answer.
  4. Copy or retry. Look for the small buttons under each reply to copy it or ask for another version. If a whole answer went wrong, it is often quicker to edit your original message than to argue with the reply.

OpenAI's own guide agrees: you don't need a perfect first prompt, just add context and refine. For more reliable results, use the role, context, task and format checklist in our guide on how to write better prompts for AI.

Step 4: Upload Files and Photos

Use the attach button next to the message box to add documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, presentations or images. On a phone you can also take a photo, for example to transcribe handwritten notes, as OpenAI's App Store listing suggests.

Good first uploads are a user manual ("How do I reset this to factory settings? Quote the page you used.") or a photo of a menu in another language ("Translate this and explain any dishes I might not know.").

Uploads have limits. OpenAI's file-uploads help article says Free users can upload only a few files per day (it lists 3), and that limits may drop at busy times. Paid plans get more.

Uploads are stored with your chat under OpenAI's retention policy and may be used for training unless you opt out (see Step 8). Check OpenAI's privacy policy and data controls page before uploading anything sensitive, remove names and ID numbers first, and never upload passwords or bank details.

Step 5: Talk to ChatGPT With Voice

On your phone: OpenAI's App Store listing describes Advanced Voice Mode, a real-time conversation you start by tapping the soundwave icon next to the message box. You can interrupt it mid-sentence. It is useful for practising an interview or getting help while your hands are busy.

On the desktop app: OpenAI's docs describe ChatGPT Voice, which can also start tasks, check progress and change direction. Select Start new voice chat, allow microphone access the first time, choose a voice, and select Stop voice chat when you're done. OpenAI lists this desktop feature for Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise.

On the Free plan: Engadget reported in August 2026 that free users get voice with lower limits and a smaller voice model. OpenAI's pricing pages don't spell out those limits.

ChatGPT can search the web when a question needs recent information, such as news or this year's rules. You can ask directly: "Search the web for the current UK passport renewal fee and link the official page."

When it searches, the answer includes links. Open them. A source can be out of date, or may not say what the summary claims.

Step 7: Projects, Memory and Custom Instructions

These three features save you from repeating yourself.

  • Projects group related chats, files and instructions, and a project's instructions apply to every chat inside it. Use one per ongoing job, such as a house move or a course. OpenAI's help center lists up to 5 files per project on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, and 40 on Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise.
  • Memory lets ChatGPT carry useful details, such as your job or preferences, from earlier chats into new ones. You manage it under Settings → Personalization. OpenAI's pricing docs note regional limits on memory, and Engadget reports it is more limited on Free.
  • Custom instructions and style. Also under Settings → Personalization, you can tell ChatGPT how to respond in every chat ("I'm a nurse in India; use metric units; keep answers short"). On the web, Base style and tone changes its personality, but not its abilities.

Our recommendation: turn memory on only if you are comfortable with ChatGPT remembering personal details, and check what it has saved from time to time.

Step 8: Use Temporary Chat and Turn Off Training

Temporary Chat. Start a new chat and select Temporary. According to OpenAI's help center:

  • the chat doesn't appear in your history;
  • it isn't used to train models while it stays temporary;
  • it doesn't create or update memories;
  • OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety reasons.

Before your first message, you choose whether the temporary chat is personalized. An unpersonalized one ignores your memories and custom instructions.

Training opt-out. Go to Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. Your chat history stays. Only new conversations are excluded from training. Two catches from OpenAI's help pages:

  • Rating a reply with a thumbs up or down can still make that conversation available for training.
  • Voice mode has its own separate data-sharing control, so check that too.

"Not used for training" is not the same as "not stored". Treat ChatGPT like any online service and keep secrets, passwords and confidential work data out of it.

Free vs Go vs Plus vs Pro: What Each Plan Adds

As of November 2026, based on OpenAI's pricing documentation and help center (US prices; the Free plan's web search is as reported by Engadget):

PlanPriceWhat it adds
Free$0GPT-6 Luna (subject to rollout), web search, uploads with daily limits, Projects (5 files each), Codex for quick coding tasks
Go$8/monthSame models as Free, with higher limits for tools, file uploads and image creation; 25 files per project
Plus$20/monthGPT-6.1 Sol, image generation, ChatGPT Voice in the desktop app, GPT-6 Astra as it rolls out, Codex on the web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS
ProFrom $100/month ($100, $200 or $500 tiers)Everything in Plus with more usage, Ultrafast mode on the $500 tier, and dots

OpenAI's own pages disagree on image generation for Free users: the ChatGPT docs pricing page says it isn't included, while the main pricing page, as quoted in search results, lists limited image creation. Check chatgpt.com/pricing yourself. For free alternatives, see how to create AI images for free.

GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's flagship model, released on September 3, 2026, and rolling out on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. If you're on Plus, reports say you may first find it in Work and Codex rather than the normal chat model menu.

Our recommendation: stay on Free for a couple of weeks and upgrade only if you keep hitting limits on tasks that matter. To weigh ChatGPT against its main rival, read ChatGPT vs Claude.

ChatGPT Work, Codex and Dots in One Minute Each

ChatGPT Work is for tasks that end in something to review, such as a brief, a slide deck or a recurring update. OpenAI's docs say it uses your files, connected apps and approved tools, and lets you approve important actions. In the desktop app, you switch to it with the Chat/Work toggle above the message box, and it can also use local files and the browser. OpenAI's pricing docs list Work on every plan, including Free, sharing usage limits with Codex; what you see depends on plan, device and rollout. For quick questions, stick with Chat.

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. Free and Go include it for quick or lightweight coding tasks, and Plus adds it on the web, command line, IDE extension and iOS. If you don't write code, you can ignore it.

Dots are always-on agents that work toward goals in the background on their own cloud computer. They are only on Pro and Business Premium, with regional limits. Our ChatGPT dots explainer covers them in detail.

Example Prompts for Common Tasks

Copy these and change the details in brackets.

TaskPrompt
Email"Rewrite this email so it's polite but clear that I need a reply by Friday. Under 100 words: [paste]"
Summarise a PDF"Summarise the attached document in 5 bullet points for someone with no background, then list anything I need to act on."
Room design from a photoAttach a photo of your room: "Suggest 3 low-cost ways to make this living room feel bigger and brighter. Keep my sofa. Budget about [amount]. List items to buy."
Study"Quiz me on [topic] with 5 questions, one at a time. Wait for my answer and explain any mistakes."
Learning tech (for seniors)"I'm 72 and new to smartphones. Explain step by step, in plain words, how to make a video call on WhatsApp on Android."
Side income"I'm good at [skill]. Suggest 5 realistic ways to earn extra money from it, with startup costs and the first step for each."

Uploading a room photo works on the Free plan. Asking ChatGPT to draw a redesigned version of the room needs image generation, which depends on your plan (see the note above).

On "making money with ChatGPT": it can help you plan and write, but it guarantees no income. In our view, promises of easy money from ChatGPT deserve suspicion.

Limits and Common Mistakes

  • Trusting every answer. ChatGPT can state wrong facts, numbers and references with complete confidence. Check anything important on an official source, and never rely on it alone for medical, legal or financial decisions.
  • Vague prompts. "Write a post about dogs" gets a generic answer. Say who it's for, the length and the tone.
  • Pasting secrets. See Step 8.
  • Forgetting about limits. Free and Go have usage limits, and OpenAI may lower upload limits at busy times. If you hit one, wait for it to reset or switch to another assistant for a while.
  • Using it at work without permission. Check your employer's AI policy first.
