Short answer: The best AI image generator depends on the job. For most people, Google's Nano Banana in the free Gemini app is the easiest start for everyday images and photo edits, Ideogram is built for images with readable text, and Midjourney suits stylised art if you're happy to pay. If you want privacy or no usage limits, run an open model such as FLUX or Stable Diffusion 3.5 on your own computer.

This is for anyone choosing between the big names before spending money. If you only want free tools, start with our guide to creating AI images for free.

Nano Banana 2.1 vs GPT Image 2.5: Same Prompts, Big Difference — Kingy AI

Midjourney vs ChatGPT: which is better for images?

They're built for different habits. Midjourney is a dedicated image tool. Its V8.2 release on July 24, 2026 focused on "aesthetics and image quality and personalization", and it learns your taste from the images you rate.

ChatGPT is a general assistant that also makes images. You describe a picture in a normal chat, then ask for changes in plain words. In the API, OpenAI lists GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst as its "most capable model for image generation and editing" and GPT-Image-2.5 Flare for "fast, high-quality everyday image generation".

In our view: pick Midjourney if images are your main hobby or job and you care about a distinctive look. Pick ChatGPT if you already pay for Plus and want images alongside writing and research.

Midjourney vs Nano Banana: what's the difference?

The biggest difference is price. Nano Banana 2 is free in the Gemini app with a Google Account, while Midjourney needs a subscription.

Google lists the same core features for Nano Banana 2 and 2.1: character consistency, text rendering, combining photos, precise editing and 2K resolution. It says 2.1 adds "clearer, more accurate text" and better world knowledge for infographics and diagrams. Paid Google AI subscribers can also select Redo with Pro to regenerate an image with Nano Banana Pro.

Nano Banana is strongest at editing a photo you already have. Upload it, describe the change, and Google says the rest of the image is preserved. Midjourney is the better fit for creating art from scratch with a consistent personal style, in our view.

Did you know? Google adds an invisible SynthID watermark to every Gemini image. You can upload a picture to the Gemini app and ask whether it was made with Google AI.

FLUX vs Midjourney, and where does Stable Diffusion fit?

FLUX and Stable Diffusion are the open side of this comparison. You can download some of their models and run them on your own graphics card, usually through ComfyUI. Midjourney, ChatGPT and Nano Banana run only on their makers' servers.

FLUX comes from Black Forest Labs. Its newest image models are FLUX 3 Image, an API model for editing with bounding boxes and native 4K output, and FLUX 3 Image Klein, an open-weight model under the FLUX Kommunity licence. For paid work on your own PC, FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is the simple choice because it uses the Apache 2.0 licence.

Stable Diffusion 3.5 (Large, Turbo and Medium) is still Stability AI's latest image family. Stability says Medium is designed for consumer hardware. Its Community Licence is free for research, non-commercial and commercial use if your annual revenue is under $1 million.

In our view: FLUX or Stable Diffusion win when you want control, privacy or unlimited generations. Midjourney wins when you want great-looking results without any setup.

Which tool is best for each job?

  • Realistic photos: try Nano Banana in Gemini for free, or GPT-Image-2.5 in ChatGPT if you pay for Plus. Run the same prompt in both and compare, as the video above does.
  • Text in images: Ideogram. Its docs say it "handles titles and short blocks well". Google says Nano Banana 2.1 makes "clearer, more accurate text". For a full workflow, see how to make YouTube thumbnails with AI.
  • Editing an existing photo: Nano Banana, Ideogram 4.5's Precise Edit, or ChatGPT. Ideogram says 4.5 "eliminates artifact buildup" across repeated edits.
  • Art styles and illustration: Midjourney, in our view, especially once it has learned your taste.
  • Interior design: upload a photo of your room to Gemini or ChatGPT and ask for a new style, colour scheme or furniture layout. Treat results as mood boards, not measured plans.
  • Privacy and local use: FLUX.2 [klein] 4B or Stable Diffusion 3.5 Medium in ComfyUI. Nothing leaves your computer.

What happens to the photos you upload?

Uploading a photo of your home, face or family sends it to the vendor's servers.

Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says human reviewers see a subset of chats, and it advises against entering anything you wouldn't want a reviewer to see. On Ideogram's free plan, everything you generate is public. For ChatGPT, check the training opt-out explained in our ChatGPT guide.

Midjourney's help pages blocked our checks, so read its privacy and visibility settings before you upload anything personal. Running a model locally is the only option where your images never leave your machine.
