How to Delete Your WhatsApp Account Permanently (iPhone and Android)
The exact in-app steps, what disappears and what doesn't, and what to do if your phone is lost or you no longer have the SIM.

Short answer: Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Settings > Account > Delete my account, enter your phone number, tap Delete account, pick a reason and confirm. Deleting the app is not enough, and WhatsApp says deletion can't be undone. It can only be done from your primary phone, not from WhatsApp Web or a linked computer.
This guide is for anyone leaving WhatsApp for good, or who has lost the phone and wants the account gone.
Before you delete: save what you want to keep
Once the account is deleted, WhatsApp says it can't restore chats, media, backups or call history. So save things first.
- Open a chat you want to keep.
- On Android, tap More options > More > Export chat. On iPhone, find Export chat in the chat's info screen.
- Choose Without media or Include media.
- Send the file to your email, Notes or a cloud drive.
- Repeat for each chat that matters.
An exported chat is a readable text file, not a backup. You can't import it back into WhatsApp later.
If you also want a copy of your account details (not your messages), use Settings > Account > Request account info. WhatsApp says the report is usually ready in about three days, so request it before you delete.
How to delete your WhatsApp account, step by step
The menu is almost the same on both phones. In WhatsApp's own wording, the menu item is Delete my account and the confirm button is Delete account.
The video below, from Gauging Gadgets, walks through the same steps on iPhone and Android. It was made in 2024, so a few menu items may have moved since.
On Android
- Open WhatsApp on the phone that has your number.
- Tap More options (the three dots, top right).
- Tap Settings, then Account.
- Tap Delete my account.
- Enter your country code and phone number.
- Tap Delete account.
- Choose a reason from the list.
- Tap Delete account again to confirm.
On iPhone
- Open WhatsApp on the iPhone that has your number.
- Tap Settings (or your profile picture).
- Tap Account, then Delete my account.
- Enter your country code and phone number.
- Tap Delete account.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
WhatsApp says deleting your account is irreversible, even if you do it by accident. Nobody, including WhatsApp support, can bring the old chats back afterwards.
What actually gets deleted (and what doesn't)
Here is what WhatsApp's Help Center and privacy policy say happens.
| Deleted? | |
|---|---|
| Account info and profile photo | Yes |
| Your place in every group | Yes, you're removed |
| Message history on your phone | Yes |
| Your Google Account (Android) chat backup | Yes, per WhatsApp's Help Center |
| Messages you sent that others still have | No, their copies stay |
| Groups you created | No, they carry on without you |
WhatsApp's Help Center names the Google Account backup specifically. If you're on iPhone, check iCloud yourself and delete the WhatsApp backup there if you don't want it kept.
Deletion also isn't instant behind the scenes. WhatsApp says it can take up to 90 days from the start of the process to delete or de-identify your information. Copies may sit in disaster-recovery backup storage for a limited time after that, and some data can be kept longer for legal reasons.
If you own a WhatsApp channel, add another admin first if you want it to survive. WhatsApp's help pages warn that channels can be deleted along with your account.
Can you delete WhatsApp without your phone or SIM?
Not directly. WhatsApp says account deletion only works on your primary device, never from a linked device. That rules out deleting it from WhatsApp Web, the desktop app or "online".
You still have options:
- You have the SIM but not the phone: put the SIM in another phone, register WhatsApp with your number, then delete the account there. Registering makes that phone your primary device.
- You lost the SIM too: ask your mobile provider for a replacement SIM with the same number. WhatsApp says you need it to get back into the account.
- You can't get the number back: WhatsApp says the account is still removed automatically after a period of inactivity.
Did you know? WhatsApp's Help Center says inactive accounts (not connected to WhatsApp) are generally deleted after 120 days, or 365 days in the US. That's why an old number you've abandoned eventually stops showing a WhatsApp profile.
What to do if your phone is lost or stolen
Your first job is to stop the thief from using your number. These steps come from WhatsApp's "About account deactivation" page.
- Call your mobile provider and ask them to block your SIM card.
- Ask for a replacement SIM with the same number.
- Install WhatsApp on a new phone and register that number.
- Restore your chats from your backup if you want them.
- Then delete the account in Settings > Account if you still want to leave.
WhatsApp also keeps a separate Help Center article, "How to recover a WhatsApp account from a lost and stolen device". Read it on faq.whatsapp.com for the latest options, and ignore anyone online who offers to "deactivate" or "recover" your account for a fee.

Deleting the app vs deleting the account
Uninstalling WhatsApp only removes the app from your phone. Your account keeps existing, and people can still find you and send you messages.
WhatsApp's privacy policy warns that if you only delete the app without using the in-app delete feature, your information is stored for longer. So if you want to leave, use Delete account first, then uninstall.
"Deactivated" is a third state. WhatsApp describes it as a temporary disable, for example after a lost phone. The account is deleted 30 days after deactivation if nobody re-registers it.
Can you delete WhatsApp and register again?
Yes, you can sign up again later with the same number, but you start from zero. WhatsApp says it can't restore or transfer chats, media, backups or call history from a deleted account.
Our view: if you only want a break, mute notifications or log out instead. Delete only when you're sure. For a similar clean exit from other apps, see how to delete your Instagram account permanently, and browse our security tools for more on keeping accounts safe.
