How to Build a Website with AI: Site Builders, Prompt-to-App Tools and Coding Assistants Compared
Three practical ways to get a website live with AI, what each one really costs to start, and the checks AI will not do for you. Every free plan below was checked on the vendor's own page.

Short answer: There are three ways to build a website with AI. (1) An AI site builder with hosting included, such as Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger, Framer, WordPress.com or Shopify: the AI drafts your pages and you edit them visually. It is the simplest route for a small business, but a custom domain needs a paid plan. (2) A prompt-to-app builder such as Lovable, Bolt.new, v0 or Google AI Studio's Build mode: you chat, and it writes real code you can preview and publish. (3) An AI coding assistant (Claude Code, Cursor or ChatGPT's Codex) plus free static hosting such as GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages or Netlify: the most work, but you own every file.
This guide is for small business owners, freelancers and students. It explains how each route works, what the free plans include as of November 2026, the steps for a no-code build and a prompt-based build, and what AI gets wrong that you must check before launch.
In this video, Darrel Wilson builds a free website with Codex and publishes it on free hosting. The creator includes affiliate links to a hosting company in the description; we do not endorse any host based on it.
How AI Website Builders Work
You describe the site in plain language: who it is for, what pages it needs, what visitors should do. A language model turns that into pages and sections, writes draft copy and picks a layout. The difference is what it produces.
- Site builders generate a site inside their own editor. You never see the code, and the site runs only on their hosting.
- Prompt-to-app builders generate an actual codebase, usually a React project, with a live preview you refine by prompting.
- Coding assistants write HTML, CSS and JavaScript files on your computer, and you decide where to host them.
None of them knows your business: prices, hours and reviews in a first draft are guesses until you replace them.
The Three Routes Compared
| Route | Examples | Cost to start (Nov 2026) | Custom domain | Who holds the code/content | Lock-in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI site builder with hosting | Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger, Framer, WordPress.com, Shopify | Free plan on Wix and Framer; free trial on Squarespace and Shopify; WordPress.com's AI builder and Hostinger need a paid plan | Paid plans only | The builder hosts everything; you keep your text and images | High: Wix and Framer say sites cannot be exported to host elsewhere |
| Prompt-to-app builder | Lovable, Bolt.new, v0, Google AI Studio Build mode | Free plans with daily or monthly limits | Paid plans on Lovable and Bolt.new | A real codebase you can usually sync to GitHub or download | Low to medium: code is portable, but hosting and databases may be tied to the platform |
| Coding assistant + free static host | Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT Codex + GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages, Netlify | Codex and Cursor have free tiers; Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan; the hosts have free tiers | Supported on the free hosting tiers | You, in your own files and repository | Lowest: plain files move to any host |
Our recommendation: if you will never touch code, pick a builder and accept the lock-in. If you might hire a developer or want to learn, pick a route that leaves you with a codebase.
Route 1: AI Site Builders With Hosting
These are the closest to "type a sentence, get a website" and the usual answer for an AI website builder for small business. As of November 2026, the official pages say:
- Wix: Wix's AI website builder (part of what Wix calls Wix Harmony) generates a site from your description, then lets you refine it with an AI agent called Aria or with drag-and-drop editing. You can start free without a credit card. Wix's own guide says the free plan uses a non-customisable
wixsite.comaddress and Wix branding, and offers no way to take payments. Connecting your own domain needs a Premium plan. - Squarespace: Squarespace has an AI website builder but no free plan. Every site starts with a 14-day free trial, and annual plans include a free custom domain for the first year.
- Hostinger: Hostinger's AI builder can generate a site from one prompt and then switch to drag-and-drop or chat-based editing. Its listed plans are all paid, include a free domain for the first year, and come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Framer: Framer's Free plan gives you a free Framer domain, 1 GB of bandwidth and 500 AI credits to try its AI agents. Connecting a custom domain needs a paid plan.
- WordPress.com: The free plan uses a
yoursite.wordpress.comaddress and shows WordPress.com ads to visitors. Its AI builder, the WordPress Agent, requires a paid plan, according to its own page. - Shopify: For online stores, Shopify says you can start a store from a prompt or a template, and it offers an AI assistant called Sidekick. There is no free plan. Shopify offers a 3-day free trial and then a low introductory price for the first three months. The amount shown depends on your country.
- GoDaddy: GoDaddy's AI builder is called Airo. GoDaddy's pages returned "403 Forbidden" when we checked, so we could not confirm its free allowance. Check its pricing page directly.
Older lists recommend "Wix ADI". Wix's current AI builder is the conversational one described above, which Wix presents as part of Wix Harmony. Some AI-generated lists also name builders that do not exist, so check that a tool is real before you sign up.
Step by Step: Build a Site With an AI Site Builder
- Write a one-paragraph brief before you open the tool. Include the business name, location, the three to five things you offer, who your customers are, and the one action you want visitors to take (call, book, buy, sign up).
- Start the AI builder and paste your brief. Vague answers produce generic sites.
- Review the page list. Most small sites need Home, About, Services or Products, Contact, and a Privacy Policy. Delete pages you cannot fill with real content.
- Replace every piece of generated text that states a fact. Prices, years in business, certifications, client names and "testimonials" must come from you.
- Swap stock or generated images for your own where it matters. Use real photos of your products, premises and team.
- Check the mobile preview and fix oversized images and buttons that are hard to tap.
- Fill in each page's SEO title and description in the page settings, then publish on the free subdomain to test.
- Upgrade and connect your domain only when the site is ready, since that is usually when billing starts.
Route 2: Prompt-to-App Builders
These tools write a real codebase from a chat and suit landing pages, portfolios and small web apps. Free limits as of November 2026:
- Lovable: The Free plan includes 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month. Projects publish to a
lovable.appaddress, and Lovable's docs say custom domains are available on paid plans. GitHub sync is available on all plans, and repositories Lovable creates are private by default. Lovable's privacy policy says it uses customer content to train its models unless you opt out in account settings. - Bolt.new: The Free plan includes 1 million tokens a month with a 300,000-token daily limit, website hosting, and Bolt branding on the site. Clicking Publish puts the project on a free
bolt.hostaddress, and a custom domain needs a paid plan. See our Bolt.new profile for more. - v0: v0's Free plan lists a 7-message-a-day limit, deployment to Vercel and GitHub sync. Vercel's free Hobby plan is restricted to non-commercial, personal use, so a business site would need a paid Vercel plan or another host.
- Google AI Studio Build mode: Build mode turns a prompt into a web app (a React front end with a Node.js server) with a live preview. You can download the code as a ZIP, sync it with GitHub, or deploy to Google Cloud Run, where Google notes that Cloud Run charges may apply. AI Studio access is part of the Gemini API free tier, and Google says free-tier content is used to improve its products, so avoid pasting private data. See our Google AI Studio page.
Step by Step: Build a Site From a Prompt
- Start small. Ask for one page first, not a whole platform. For example: "Build a single-page website for a dog-grooming business in Pune. Sections: hero with a 'Book now' button linking to a phone number, three services with placeholder prices marked [PRICE], opening hours, a map placeholder, and a footer with a privacy policy link. Mobile-first, accessible colour contrast, no fake reviews."
- Check the preview on desktop and phone before asking for more.
- Change one thing per prompt. Our guide to writing better prompts for AI covers this in more depth.
- Replace placeholders with real content yourself, or paste the exact text and ask the tool to insert it unchanged.
- Connect GitHub (or download the code) early, so you have a copy outside the platform.
- Publish to the tool's free subdomain, test every link and form, and only then connect a domain.
- Watch your credits. A long fix-this-bug loop can use up a free allowance quickly.
Route 3: Coding Assistants Plus Free Hosting
To own the code, have an AI coding assistant write a static site and host it for free, as in the video above. This is also how to build a website with Claude:
- Claude Code requires a Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise or Console account; Anthropic's docs say the free Claude plan does not include it. See Claude Code.
- Cursor has a Free plan with limited agent and chat requests; its cheapest paid plan is listed at $8 a month.
- ChatGPT's Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans. OpenAI describes the Free tier as a way to explore Codex on quick coding tasks.
Free static hosting, per official docs as of November 2026:
| Host | Free tier | Custom domain | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Pages | Public repositories on GitHub Free; sites up to 1 GB; soft 100 GB/month bandwidth | Yes | Not intended for an online business focused on transactions, or for passwords and card numbers |
| Cloudflare Pages | 500 builds a month; up to 20,000 files; 25 MiB per file | Yes (up to 100 per project) | Build limits if you deploy very often |
| Netlify | 300 credits a month with a hard limit, never charged | Yes, with SSL | Each production deploy costs 15 credits and each GB of bandwidth 20, so frequent deploys use the allowance fast |
A typical flow: ask the assistant for a one-page site with semantic HTML and a separate stylesheet, open index.html in your browser, iterate, push the folder to GitHub, then connect that repository to a host above. If you are new to code, read where a beginner should start learning to code; the basics make AI output easier to judge.
What AI Does Badly: Check These Before You Publish
- Invented facts and testimonials. Google's guidance asks publishers to fact-check all AI-generated content. In the US, the FTC's rule on reviews bans fake testimonials, including AI-generated ones. Delete any review, statistic, award or client logo you cannot prove.
- Accessibility. An accessible site can be used by people with disabilities. Check colour contrast, alt text on every image, heading order and keyboard navigation.
- Image rights. Use your own photos, licensed stock, or images whose terms allow commercial use. If you generate images, see our guide to creating AI images for free for each tool's licence notes.
- Privacy policy and cookie consent. If you collect emails, run analytics or embed third-party content, you likely need a privacy policy, and in some regions a cookie banner. AI does not know your data practices, so have a draft reviewed.
- SEO basics. Give each page a unique title and meta description, one clear main heading, descriptive link text and compressed images. Google says the same review applies to AI-written titles, descriptions and alt text, and that mass-producing pages with AI without adding value can violate its spam policies.
- Mobile view and speed. Test on a real phone; large images and heavy animation are the usual culprits.
- Forms, logins and payments. Anything that collects data needs validation, spam protection and HTTPS. Do not build your own payment or login system from a prompt. Use your platform's built-in store or a reputable payment provider, and have generated authentication code reviewed by someone who knows security.
Do not paste API keys, passwords or customers' personal data into a prompt. Check each tool's privacy page for how prompts are stored and whether they are used for training.
Domains, Publishing and an Exit Plan
Domains. Free plans give you a vendor subdomain (wixsite.com, lovable.app, github.io and so on). For a business, a custom domain is worth paying for. Several builders include one free for the first year, so compare renewal prices. A domain bought from a separate registrar is easier to move later.
Publishing. Test on the free subdomain, then connect your domain, wait for HTTPS to activate, and submit the site to Google Search Console.
Exit plan. Decide on day one how you would leave:
- Wix: Its help centre says sites must be hosted on Wix's servers and cannot be exported to host elsewhere. You can keep a domain registered with another provider.
- Framer: Framer says it does not offer HTML export for self-hosting.
- Squarespace: It exports a WordPress-format XML file containing layout pages, one blog, text and images. Store pages, product blocks, styles and custom CSS do not export, and trial sites cannot export.
- WordPress.com: You can export posts, pages and comments as XML, plus the media library. A full backup including theme and plugins requires the Business or Commerce plan.
- Lovable, Bolt.new, v0 and Google AI Studio: All offer GitHub connection or code download in some form (Lovable's Download codebase option needs a paid plan). Keep the repository up to date.
- Coding-assistant route: The files are already yours.
After launch, set a reminder to update prices and hours, renew the domain and check that forms still deliver.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build a website with AI for free?
Yes, if you accept a vendor subdomain. Wix and Framer have free plans, Lovable, Bolt.new and v0 have free tiers, and GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages and Netlify host static sites for free. A custom domain on a builder usually needs a paid plan.
How do AI website builders work?
You describe your site, and a language model generates the page structure, layout and draft copy. You then edit the result visually or by further prompts, and publish it on the vendor's hosting or your own.
What is the best AI website builder for small business?
In our view, a hosted builder such as Wix, Squarespace or Hostinger suits most local businesses because hosting, forms and editing are in one place. Choose Shopify if selling products is the main goal.
Can I build a website with Claude?
Yes. Claude Code can write a full site on your computer for you to put on a free static host, but it needs a paid Claude plan or a Console account.
How do I build a website with Google AI Studio?
Open Build mode, describe the site and refine it through chat with the live preview. Then download the code, sync it to GitHub, or deploy to Cloud Run, which may incur charges.
What does Reddit recommend for AI website builders?
Opinions vary by thread and change quickly, so treat them as anecdotes. Test the free tier, sync or export your work early, and check the custom-domain cost before you commit.
How do I use the Wix, Hostinger or Framer AI builder?
Wix and Hostinger follow the same pattern: describe your business in a prompt, review the generated pages, then edit with drag-and-drop or chat. Wix lets you start free, Hostinger's plans are paid with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and Framer's free plan includes 500 AI credits to try its agents.
